It’s a better world at Christmas.
Christmas spirit is such an amazing thing that you can feel it in a busy department store. Just about twelve months ago I stood in long lines at stores I would not have been in but for the holiday, and experienced a brand of human kindness that brought me peace. I remember watching people in one line give grace to the busy clerk who was doing her best in our shared situation.
It was particularly punctuated by the person just a bit in front of me that behaved harshly. Person after person gave Christmas greetings and grace, so the one exception was stunning.
I would love to live in that world all year. A place where selfishness and rudeness were unusual and people went out of their way to care for the person in front of them.
We call it the Christmas spirit. It’s a tenderness that many people exhibit this time of year. In a normal year, you can feel it all around you. This season I need it even more.
Perhaps I need to exhibit that special kind of humanity more this Christmas. More people are certain to need an extra dose in 2020.
Wonder if I can make it all the way through Christmas and on to next year. I might be able to live in a better world.
I think I’ll try it.
“Be kind and helpful to one another, tender-hearted compassionate, understanding, forgiving one another readily and freely, just as God in Christ also forgave you.”
